Perception Studies for Geo-temporal data

Vanessa Peña-Araya, Emmanuel Pietriga, Anastasia Bezerianos

The work done during my PhD motivated the two user studies conducted during my first year as postdoc with the ILDA team where I compared visualizations for geo-temporal data. The first study evaluated three representative visualizations for the task of identifying the correlation between two variables and if they follow a trend over time. An example of this kind of analysis is when studying developing metrics for a particular country or region (e.g. the evolution of both the life expectancy at birth and the fertility rate). In the second study we evaluated three visualizations for the analysis of propagation phenomena. We based our analytical tasks on work found in the literature about virus and social media propagation. Our results show that the visualizations selected will perform better depending on the analytical task.

The work had the following publications:

From the results of both studies, we extracted a set of design guidelines in their respective conditions.
